2017/18 CFBH Crew Team

Starting November 4th, we’re excited to begin an OFFICIAL Crew Team for “Beach Sprints”.

WHAT IS THE  “BEACH SPRINTS” EVENT?:
Beach Sprints is an annual 2,000 meter race on a Concept 2 indoor rower. This competition is hosted by the Long Beach Rowing Association that’s located in the Marine Stadium Boat House. This event draws a lot of local rowers, specifically Collegiate and former-collegiate rowers.

Beach Sprints is on Saturday, February 3rd.

There are many divisions for this event, so you won’t be competing against some college or high school kids…LOL! Here are how divisions are broken down:

1. SEX: Each Division is separated by sex
2. AGE: Those under 30 will be in the “Open” division. Athletes older than 30 (on race day) will be either “Masters” (30-39), “Senior” (40-49), or “Veteran” (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+)
3. WEIGHT: Your division again will be separated by weight. Lightweight for the winter time is 165lbs for men, and 135lbs for women across the board.

Most divisions will race in large heats, between 8-16 rowers! Not all rowers in your heat may be in your same Division, and Men will usually not race with Women. All the rowers are linked up to a screen that shows each rower, in real time, as an actual boat on the water racing everyone else in your heat. So you can actually see who’s leading!

The environment is very exciting, there’s a LOT of yelling/cheering,  but you’ll have to check your nerves and stick to YOUR game plan.

CFBH CREW CLASSES: Start Saturday, Nov 4
Crew classes will be Saturdays at 11am (after the TEAM WOD). There will be a total of 10 classes, every Saturday, except on Nov 25 (Thanksgiving) and Dec 23 (Christmas). These classes will be exclusively for CFBH Crew members only. This will be a 1-hour class led by a former Collegiate Rower (LBSU) and CrossFit Coach, Josh Tims.

WHO IS OUR ROWING COACH?
Josh Tims was a former Coach for CFBH and was a Collegiate Rower for 4 Years at Long Beach State, Collegiate Coach for 3 years, and has been a personal trainer for 18 years.

WHAT YOU’LL BE TAUGHT:
This rowing class will be programmed just like a strength cycle, except for we’ll spend most of our time on a rower. Rowing, in some ways, can be compared to golf. Most of us, without any specialized training, can hop on a rower and go, just like most of us can go to a driving range or golf course and just hack away. But what happens when you learn to do it the right way, with great technique?

You’ll get efficient, stronger, and faster.

There are also strategic tactics and techniques to a 2K race that you’ll be taught.

You’ll also learn how to read and understand the rower computer and use it as a tool to see how you’re performing throughout the race and training and to keep you on track.

TEAM DUES WILL INCLUDE:
1) One CFBH Crew Shirt or Tank (You’ll be able to purchase addition ones for $20)
2)Registration to Beach Sprints.

NON-CFBH MEMBERS CAN JOIN THE CREW TEAM:

Athletes without a current CFBH membership can join the CFBH Crew team by purchasing a “Non-Member 5 or 10-week” package. Both of these packages include a CFBH Crew shirt or tank, and Beach Sprints registration (Optional).

FAQ

1) WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO ATTEND A ROW CLASS?
You can purchase a single here for $25.

2. WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO DO BEACH SPRINTS?
Of course, you can decline to participate in Beach Sprints, but our purpose for this Team is for everyone to set an individual goal for this event, and to hit it! There will be no credit back should you choose not to register for Beach Sprints.

3. CAN I PARTICIPATE IN BEACH SPRINTS EVEN IF I’M NOT ON THE CFBH CREW TEAM?
YES!! Signing up for Beach Sprints isn’t any different than signing up for a 5K Run. We have 10-weeks to train to get you ready, and we HIGHLY recommend that if you’re interest in doing Beach Sprints, to sign-up for the CFBH Crew Team.

4. WILL WE ONLY ROW THE ROW CLASS?
Most of our time will be spent on a rower, but there will be conditioning and row-related exercises/movements that we will do as well.

5. HOW MANY MEMBERS CAN BE ON THE TEAM?
We can have up to 16 Athletes on the team!
